In 2011, CM Punk worked his way to the top of WWE. He also delivered one of the most daring, fourth wall shattering promos of all time.
He became the number one contender for the WWE Championship and was scheduled to face John Cena at Money in the Bank. After winning the number one contender’s match, Punk announced that he will be leaving WWE after Money in the Bank.
In Chicago, Illinois, Punk defeated John Cena in front a raucous hometown crowd. He then escaped with the title through the crowd.
Vince convinced Punk to come back to the WWE. He faced John Cena at SummerSlam for the Undisputed WWE Championship, where he beat him. Unfortunately, an attack from Kevin Nash allowed Alberto del Rio to cash in his MITB contract and take the title from Punk.
Punk was out of the title picture for a while which led to him picking a fight with Triple H. At Night of Champions 2011, Punk faced Triple H in a No Disqualification match. Hunter beat Punk, even though Punk was the fan favourite.
