When Vince informed Punk that he would be facing Triple H at WrestleMania, Punk said, “All due respect, I do not need to wrestle you. You need to wrestle me. I do not want to wrestle you, I seriously resent you for not putting me over you three years ago when you should have. That would have been best for business.”

The rise of CM Punk in 2011

In 2011, CM Punk worked his way to the top of WWE. He also delivered one of the most daring, fourth wall shattering promos of all time.

He became the number one contender for the WWE Championship and was scheduled to face John Cena at Money in the Bank. After winning the number one contender’s match, Punk announced that he will be leaving WWE after Money in the Bank.

In Chicago, Illinois, Punk defeated John Cena in front a raucous hometown crowd. He then escaped with the title through the crowd.

Vince convinced Punk to come back to the WWE. He faced John Cena at SummerSlam for the Undisputed WWE Championship, where he beat him. Unfortunately, an attack from Kevin Nash allowed Alberto del Rio to cash in his MITB contract and take the title from Punk.

Punk was out of the title picture for a while which led to him picking a fight with Triple H. At Night of Champions 2011, Punk faced Triple H in a No Disqualification match. Hunter beat Punk, even though Punk was the fan favourite.

“I didn’t wanna give him the f**kin’ privilege,” said Punk. Punk went on to say that Triple H never liked him in the first place. Ironically, CM Punk made his WWE debut alongside Triple H in 2006.

Punk did not appreciate losing to a part timer, especially at a time where he was white hot. Triple H even tried to pacify Punk after WrestleMania 29.

Punk vs Undertaker was the best match of the night, and Hunter tried to convince him that his match really was the main event.

“I’m not f**king stupid. There’s just one main event.”

Punk implored Hunter if he was really the main event, then why wasn’t he getting paid the same amount as him, or The Rock or John Cena. Vince McMahon hugged CM Punk as he expressed his wish to quit and he reluctantly shook Triple H’s hand as he walked out of the company.
