“13 of Her Cousins Starve to Death”: Paul Heyman Explains Why Watching Him Eat as a Child Was ‘Revenge’ for His Mother Who Witnessed Famine and Starvation

The Holocaust is one of the most tragic events for the European Jews. Several people lost their lives and very few survived by the end of World War 2. Paul Heyman’s mother, Sulamita, is one of the survivors of the Holocaust. Recently, The Wise Man disclosed details about his mother witnessing famine, starvation, and the death of her 13 cousins during the holocaust. Moreover, the 57-year-old WWE legend gave the details of why it was revenge for his mother to watch him eat when he was a child.

Paul Heyman talks about his mother being a Holocaust survivor

The former ECW CEO recently gave an interview to Tetragrammaton with Rick Rubin. While talking about his love for food, he shared about his mother’s Holocaust experience.

The Bloodline’s Special Counsel recalled his mother loved seeing eat him as a child as she never got to experience the joy of it. She went through an extremely tough time in the Lodz ghetto and during her time from Auschwitz to Bergen Belsen.

Heyman said, “I’m the son of a holocaust survivor, my mother was in Auschwitz and Bergen Belsen. So growing up watching her son eat gave my mother joy. I’m so indulging in food was encouraged because it was something my mother couldn’t do as a child.”

He added, “So watching her child do it was revenge for her. She grew up watching 13 of her cousins starve to death in the Lodz ghetto, watched two grandmothers die of starvation, and aunts. And then also in Auschwitz and Bergen Belsen, she witnessed famine and starvation.”

In an interview the 57-year-old gave to Brian Koppelman a few weeks ago, Heyman recalled, ‘My mother’s mother and his mother’s sister who was seven went straight to the gas chambers.’The former Advocate’s mother got liberated in 1945 in Bergen Belsen and also got ill at the age of 18 years old.

At the time, it was unclear whether it was ‘typhus, typhoid, or both’. Even though she was given a low chance of survival, his mother recovered and became a nurse at the Displaced Persons Hospital in Berlin. She had nowhere to go in 1945, but fortunes favored the bold as she ended up in North America.

How did Heyman’s mother come to the United States?

In the interview, Paul Heyman shared that in 1949, one of his mother’s uncles came to find her in Berlin. As per him, that uncle traveled to Poland several times to see if any of his relatives is alive.

After he found her, he took Heyman’s mother to Canada where the uncle lived. Furthermore, from Canada, she migrated to the US through the highest Hebrew Immigration Aid Society.

The WWE legend’s mother lived a long life from 1928 to 2009. She strongly went through the darker period of her life, but later lived a happy family life until she passed away.
