“I Was So Frustrated”- The Undertaker Reveals Why He Wanted to Leave WWE

WWE Chairman Vince McMahon has mentioned on several occasions how The Undertaker is one of his most loyal employees. He has stayed with the company for over three decades. The Undertaker was recently in an interview with Sam Roberts on Notsam Wrestling Podcast where he was asked if he ever thought about leaving the company.
WWE was on the top of the ladder for many years, but slowly another promotion became direct rivals. Ted Turner founded World Championship Wrestling (WCW), and WWE took a major hit. Many of their top Superstars left the company to join the rival promotion; Hulk Hogan, Ric Flair among many others.

WCW was able to bring in some big names and that boosted the company status. While WCW went with strong storylines, WWE made their wrestlers follow some comedic gimmicks. Things didn’t go well for the company as WCW had a stronger ground.
Undertaker said, “I was so frustrated with our creative direction, We had a bunch of really goofy characters and then WCW was down there doing real angels, and it was common knowledge that they basically opened up the checkbook”

Being a loyal businessman
WCW had attractive pay scales for their wrestlers. Being involved in better storylines and better pay made many reconsider their options. At that point, the wrestling business was growing to be one of the biggest sports industries in the world.

“I had to hear guys talk about the money that they’re making and know you’d be able to write a pretty big check and stay at home most of the time. So, those thoughts were there, but when it really got down to it, I just can’t. Obviously, I’m not the best businessman, but something inside of me said ‘You can’t leave here”, Undertaker said.
Undertaker trusted Vince McMahon and decided to stay. The company would eventually reach new heights and eliminate competition. His loyalty paid off as Vince was one of the major reasons behind his legendary career.

“After him giving me an opportunity, and what the other guys had said to me, and Undertaker happened and was off and running, I can’t leave. My loyalty to him for giving me that opportunity was more than the short-term cash I could’ve [gotten] by going back down to WCW”, Undertaker explained.
The Phenom announced his retirement on the last chapter of his documentary ‘The Last Ride’. A 30 plus year career was finally put to rest. The Undertaker was one of the finest wrestlers to have ever graced the ring and we can only be thankful that he decided to stick with his guts.
