Back when Brock Lesnar used to wrestle 20 minute watches and worked a technical ground style instead of twenty suplexes, he had one of the greatest wrestling matches of all times against Kurt Angle.

The year was 2003 and the stage was WrestleMania. Angle was the devious heel defending his covered World Championship. The Beast was still new but had taken the entire WWE by storm.

He was already a one time world champion and had taken out legends like The Rock and The Undertaker. However, he was tricked by his own manager Paul Heyman who sided with The Big Show and cost him the title.

After nursing an injury following this betrayal, Lesnar returned to a changed landscape. He first helped Angle defeat The Big Show for the world title.

However, his own title shot was still far away. Firstly, he had to defeat The Big Show to qualify for the Royal Rumble match. If he somehow achieved that, he had to win the Royal Rumble match to challenge Angle at WrestleMania.

The Beast Incarnate achieved both these feats on the same night in a super heroic effort. Hence, the stage was set for the ultimate showdown.

Brock Lesnar risked his career

The entire match was worked to perfection. Angle didn’t let Lesnar use his strength by constantly targeting his ankle and applying various versions of the Ankle Lock.

Technique was on full-display during this masterpiece. In what was a testament to Brock Lesnar’s talent, he used all his vicious slams, but ensured that Angle didn’t hurt his injured neck.

However, one spot from the match still inspires awe. The heavy-set Lesnar attempted a Shooting Star Press from the top rope.

Unfortunately, he badly botched the move despite his bravery. He failed to turn his body completely and landed squarely on his head and neck.

When the weight of a 300 pound, 6 foot 5 man falls upon the head and neck, it’s not a pretty picture. The move left Lesnar badly concussed. Thankfully, his neck was not broken.

He was saved from paralysis by mere inches. Lesnar would never attempt the move again in his life. At the end of the day, it was for the best.
