WWE has had a fair share of gimmick matches and PPVs over the years. Starting from Hell in a Cell to Elimination Chamber, TLC, Extreme Rules, and Royal Rumble to name a few. These gimmicks have helped gather large crowds over the years, and some have established themselves as some of the most essential PPVs of all time.

However, these past years, the PPV Extreme Rules had lost its charm, with the majority of the matches being not so ‘extreme’. But this time, under Triple H’s guidance, the pay-per-view might finally bring back its old feel.

After years of having a disappointing Extreme Rules match card, 2022 and Triple H finally have something exciting planned for the matches.

What does each Extreme Rules match stipulation mean?

1. Extreme Rules Match

An extreme rules match is just like a no-DQ match but with a variety of weapons available for the superstars. The match is also known by various other names such as, ‘No Holds Barred’ or ‘No Disqualification Match’.

These sorts of matches allow the superstars extreme creative freedom of going all out against their opponents. These matches have often turned extremely violent for the viewers but are a good way for ending a feud.

2. Fight Pit Match

This is a variation of the traditional steel cage match, where the ring is surrounded by the steel structure instead of the usual ropes and turnbuckles with a catwalk surrounding the cage from the top. The match also has a no-pinfall stipulation, resulting only in submission and knockout way of victory. The catwalk has metal railings and an outer edge, where the wrestlers can climb up to and jump from.

The first fight-pit match was held between Matt Riddle and Timothy Thatcher in 2020. And it will make its return now at the 2022 Extreme Rules. Riddle will again be in the match but this time against Seth ‘Freakin’ Rollins.

3. Strap Match

A strap match is one of the most brutal and hardcore matches to existing in the industry. In this match, both opponents are strapped together by their arms using a leather strap. The strap can be used as a weapon as well.

The only method of winning this type of match is by performing a pin-fall. Submissions are not allowed are also not allowed in these sorts of matches. This match is a violent affair, and often superstars taking part in these sorts of matches, leave the ring with marks on their bodies.

4. Ladder match

Ladder matches are one of the most popular wrestling matches. In this type of match, an object or a championship is often hung at the top of the ring, and wrestlers need to climb up the ladder to retrieve it.

The match also includes a variety of weapons, but mostly tables, ladders, and chairs. This concept is heavily used under the ‘Money in the bank’ gimmick. Ladder matches are no-disqualification matches as well, and turn extremely violent.

5. Good Old Fashioned Donnybrook match

A good old-fashioned donnybrook match is another term for the popular ‘no-disqualification’ match. It is a signature WWE Match and mostly involves Sheamus in it. The match first took place on the July 29th, 2022 edition of SmackDown between Sheamus and Drew McIntyre.

The match has the stipulations of, ‘no-DQ’, ‘no-count outs’, and ‘anything goes’. However, the first match prohibited the use of McIntyre’s sword because of its obvious deadly consequences. Like many other matches, this can also be termed a ‘no-disqualification’ match. In layman’s terms, the match is a ‘no-holds-barred match’; the only way to win is by pin-fall or submission.

6. “I Quit” Match

A type of wrestling match, where the only way to win is by making your opponents say the words, “I Quit.” It can also be termed as a variation of a submissions match where instead of making your opponent tap, one has to make them say those words.
