Why is The Undertaker Called the Deadman?

The Undertaker is one of the most decorated superstars in WWE history. He made a significant impact with his gimmick in the wrestling world. Right from his debut in 1990, The Undertaker (Mark Calaway) performed as a mysterious character. The wrestling fans loved the way he entered and competed in his matches. His Overall gimmick surprised the fans.

Before joining WWE, he was a part of WCW and played a villain gimmick called ‘Mean Mark’. This gimmick proved a failed attempt at the Deadman’s career. However, Bruce Prichard and Vince McMahon brought Mark Calaway to WWE. In 1990, WWE introduced him to a new gimmick called The Undertaker, where the legendary character emerged.

WWE introduced him as a mysterious character like ‘The Deadman‘. During The Undertaker’s early recognition, he made a dynamic impact with intense matches and never losing streak. In the prior days of his debut, Paul Bearer accompanied him and revitalized him with the help of an urn.

The Undertaker made his debut in the 1990 Survivor Series as the mystery partner of Ted DiBiase’s Million Dollar Team. Eventually, he debuted as a heel but got a lot of appreciation from the wrestling fans. Moreover, he got many opportunities on the way to the main card match.

When did Undertaker go back to Deadman?

In 2000, The Undertaker changed his gimmick from “Deadman” to “American Bad **s”. The Undertaker returned to the ring after 8 months because of his injuries.

However, this return had a surprise for the fans. Though, this new gimmick wasn’t appreciated for a long time by the fans. The evolution of ‘The American Bad**s’ to ‘Big Evil’ featured a new personality of the Undertaker. The personality got a boost in the start, but fans wanted the old ‘Deadman’ gimmick back.

In 2003, Undertaker got in a feud with Vince McMahon, where Vince partnered Kane to defeat The Big Evil. At the 2003 Survivor Series, Kane successfully buried The Undertaker in a Buried Alive Match. This ended the Big Evil era of the Undertaker.

However, the fans got their wishes fulfilled with the Deadman’s return at WrestleMania 20. At WrestleMania 20, The Undertaker returned with his old gimmick as ‘The Deadman’ alongside Paul Bearer. Eventually, the match made a historic impression on ‘The Undertaker’s return as he secured an emphatic victory over Kane.

Once again, the Deadman was back in his old form, exciting the fans with his mysterious gimmick.

Over the years, the Undertaker spent 30 years in WWE with iconic matches with a consecutive winning WrestleMania streak of 21 wins. This is one of the biggest achievements of any wrestler in WWE history.
