WWE Re-Signs 39-Year-Old Superstar After Firing Him Three Months Ago

WWE has released a lot of its employees due to budget cuts because of the pandemic. While many WWE employees lost their jobs amidst the pandemic, a few superstars came back permanently or for one-off appearances.

Former WWE superstars like Heath Slater and Mickie James appeared after their releases. Also, the Queen of the Ring winner Zelina Vega returned to the company full time in 2021.

One name on the released superstars’ list was Drake Maverick. In 2020, he shared an emotional video on Twitter that got him his job back. However, he got released in 2021 as well after making his last appearance on November 8.

Recently, it was reported that Maverick has been signed by WWE again and has been part of the backstage WWE Raw creative team for a few weeks. 

Per Fightful, Vince McMahon’s wrestling promotion added him to the creative team even before his 90-day non-compete clause ended. 

How many WWE superstars lost their jobs in 2020 and 2021?

When the pandemic hit the world in early 2020, the promotion went to doing shows at the WWE Performance Center with no fans in attendance. Hence, there was little opportunity for revenue generation for the company.

In April, during the peak time of the pandemic, they started releasing their employees under the reason of Budget Cuts. These releases took place at various intervals till November, with 120 superstars getting their marching orders. Big names like Samoa Joe, Rusev, Aleister Black, Bray Wyatt, Braun Strowman, etc had to leave the WWE.

Some of the released wrestlers went to AEW, while some were away from pro-wrestling. Few of them went to the independent circuit and got immense success like Zack Ryder.
