“You End Up Working At McDonald’s”- Randy Orton Blasts NXT Wrestlers

The past one or two years, Randy Orton has found himself in the midst of an emerging debate in professional wrestling. NXT and AEW along with other independent wrestling promotions have given rise to a new brand of sports entertainment.

High flying moves and awe inspiring spots have become the norm. That makes for a more entertaining match but it also puts wrestlers at more risk. Just a slight mishap in the execution of a dangerous move can cause career threatening injuries.

Superstars like Randy Orton have refused to adapt to this new style. Orton still considers himself a purist. He’s a believer in Jim Cornette‘s philosophy and believes that wrestling was never supposed to be a “circus” that pleads for claps from casual audiences.

Instead, it’s an art form which requires two men to get into a ring and tell a story. That wouldn’t happen by exchanging a few cool looking moves and kicking out of a move that would kill a normal person. Instead, it needs depth of character and psychological control over the audiences.

Randy Orton calls out NXT wrestlers

Randy Orton was asked a question about his retirement. He used the opportunity to bash NXT wrestlers.

I’ve been doing this 20 years, and I’ll do it another 10. My plan would be to keep going until my 50th birthday. I would be able to do that and support my family for 30 years because of the way I tell stories in the ring. The facial expression, transitional things, those are the things people remember.”

If you only get 3 or 4 years of a career with the WWE because you did a lot of careless and reckless moves, you have to look back and kick yourself in the ass and wish that you didn’t. Smarter, not harder. When it comes down to it, this is a business, we all need to make money. You can’t destroy your body and make no money doing it and then you end up working at McDonalds because you never went to college and you destroyed your neck in the ring. There has to be a purpose and that purpose is getting paid.

“That’s my biggest concern for those guys in NXT. I would love to go down there and share a little bit of knowledge with them.”

There can be disagreements on his thought process but you have to confess that Orton has built a successful career out of doing what he just said. In fact, he has a lot more mainstream popularity that many NXT wrestlers might ever achieve. There’s a reason why he’s called the Apex predator of the company.
