After leaving WWE in 2006, former World Champion and Olympic Gold medalist Kurt Angle did not return till 2017. First, WWE inducted him into the Hall of Fame, and then Angle returned as the RAW General Manager.

Interestingly, The Legend returned to Monday Night RAW after WrestleMania 33. This ‘coincident’ led many fans to speculate that Angle’s return as the General Manager was the long-time in the making.

However, The Hall of Famer revealed a different story. While talking to his podcast The Kurt Angle Show, he said the plan was very impromptu and came on the night before RAW itself.

Actually it(the plan) occurred the night of the Hall of Famer, right before I went out to accept the award,” Angle said. “Vince McMahon came into my locker room… the room they had set for me backstage.”

“‘He said, Hey I want to be the general manager of RAW starting tomorrow.'” Angle was offered a deal and he made himself clear that he would want to wrestle in the future.

To this, Mr. McMahon said, “we would get around to that eventually. Don’t worry about that we’ll get there. I said ‘okay as long as I wanna I’m gonna wrestle.’ I got the offer the night before, (in) the Hall of Fame. The next day is when I started the General Manager job.”

John Cena inducted Angle into the WWE Hall of Fame. The next night on WWE RAW, Mr. McMahon himself welcomed Kurt to WWE programming after 11 years.

How was the second coming of Kurt Angle?

One of the first things Angle did as a GM was to bring in his “on-screen son” Jason Jordan into WWE. Various superstars then accused Angle of Kayfabe nepotism per storyline.

He returned to the WWE ring after a decade as a replacement for Roman Reigns in the SHIELD at TLC that year. Angle was also the leader of Team RAW at Survivor Series 2017.

He then teamed up with debuting Ronda Rousey at WrestleMania 34 and took out Triple H and Stephanie McMahon in a mixed tag team match. A few weeks later, Angle was relieved of his duties and Baron Corbin took his place as GM.

This eventually gave rise to a staunch rivalry between Corbin and Angle. Fans saw the latter teaming up with other WWE superstars to take down Corbin.

Angle had his last match against Corbin which the former world champion lost. Angle then began producing WWE, and made brief appearances, before leaving the company in 2020.

While his second WWE run was appreciated, Angle’s loss to Corbin in his retirement was not endorsed by both fans and critics alike. This frustration with WWE gave rise to speculations that Angle would return for a proper retirement match somewhere else.
