World No.1 Novak Djokovic has up his game by turning his serve into a weapon before the 2020 season. However, the Serb’s serve has been the most underrated part of his game mainly due to his mastery in the return game. Serving masterclass John Isner also rates Djokovic’s service as highly effective.

According to the statistics, Djokovic was ranked fifth in the service games won leaderboards in 2019. Moreover, he has been finishing among the top 10 in service games won every season since 2011 with an exception of 2017.

“He spot serves it very well” – John Isner

The 17-time Grand Slam champion revamped his service motion when he was struggling with elbow issues in 2017. Since then he has improved a lot on his serves. He is now able to get more free points and get pressure off his service games. Isner also believes that Djokovic has changed his serve from a liability to an asset.

“You actually don’t think about his service, which is kind of disrespectful to him in a sense, just because he does everything so well,” Isner said in an interview with the ATPTour.com.

Isner explained that Djokovic’s serve is overlooked due to his return and of course his movement around the court. In addition, his groundstrokes are also the best in the world. Consequently, his serve looks weak. However, the American feels that he has definitely improved it.

“Djokovic spot serves it very well. He won’t necessarily hit it 130 miles per hour, but he’s definitely improved that part of his game,” Isner said. “He would even say probably six or seven years ago that his serve was a bit of a liability. But now it’s not at all, and that’s why he’s the most dominant player in the game.”
