In a recent Instagram post of “Sportscenter” and “ESPN”, it was stated that, “Kevin Garnett still gets paid $5 million every year till 2024.”. The caption of the Instagram post explains, “The Celtics still owe Kevin Garnett $35 million over the course of seven years after he retired as the result of deferred salary.”.

Despite earning a whopping total of $325 million during his 21-year NBA career, the Boston Celtics legend gets paid $5 million by the NBA to this day, but how?

Kevin Garnett’s Case of a ‘Deferred Salary’

A ‘deferred salary’ simply means that instead of paying the professional athlete the promised amount in the initial contract, the ‘deferred salary’ clause in the contract will ensure that the athlete gets paid over a stipulated period of time.

This is done so that professional sports team can easily and efficiently delegate their funds to their players. Two sources told NBA.com that the former Celtics forward will still receive $35 million even after he retires. After retiring in 2016, he’ll be due $5 million annually for seven years. This is the result of the deferred salary that Kevin Garnett got in each of his past two contract extensions, thanks to agent Andy Miller.
