Two American actors have turned the tide in the lower-tiers of English soccer. After the evolution of Wrexham AFC, the notion of the club has completely changed. Kudos to Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, who revealed the behind-the-scenes workings of the Welsh outfit with their FX Docuseries, Welcome to Wrexham. The show has put the spotlight on the quaint town and its beloved club, and now season one, “Welcome to Wrexham: Do or Die,” is being honored by the Emmys.

The documentary series already made waves in the sporting world, but being nominated and subsequently winning a few Emmy Awards, is a testament to the whole unit.

1. Outstanding Cinematography For A Reality Program – 2023

Status – Won

Welcome to Wrexham: “Do or Die” won the award which is presented to programs that have showcased excellent technique and coherency in camerawork, lighting, and movement. Other nominees for the award included Deadliest Catch, Survivor and Life Below Zero.

2. Outstanding Picture Editing For An Unstructured Reality Program – 2023

Status – Won

“Do or Die” was conferred with this award, after it was able to compile all the necessary moments in a seamless way for the viewers. The work made sure that all the appropriate moments were present in the final cut. Other nominees included RuPaul’s Drag Race: Untucked and Life Below Zero.

3. Outstanding Unstructured Reality Program – 2023

Status – Won

Welcome to Wrexham won the main award in the category they were nominated. Placed under the Unstructured Reality Program, the Welsh club’s depiction has been chosen as the best show without a structured script. This means that the actions in the show were independent of any particular prior script. The docuseries aced other top hits like Selling Sunset and Netflix’s Indian Matchmaking.

4. Outstanding Sound Editing For A Non-fiction Or Reality Program (Single Or Multi-Camera) – 2023

Status- Nominee

The show was nominated, owing to decent sound editing and design, but it lost out to Brett Morgen’s award winning David Bowie documentary, Moonage Daydream.

5. Outstanding Directing For A Reality Program – 2023

Status – Won

One of the biggest merits of any film or show is its direction. And Welcome to Wrexham, directed by Bryan Rowland, can boast of being the best in its category. Other shows in the list were RuPaul’s Drag Race, Queer Eye and Top Chef.

6. Outstanding Sound Mixing For A Reality Program (Single or Multi-Camera) – 2023

Status – Won

The final award won by the blockbuster is for its sound mixing. Mark Jensen, who is the Re-Recording Mixer received accolades for dealing with background noise, dialogue, music, and sound effects.

Despite not attending the ceremony, both superstars, Reynolds and McElhenney, did not hold back in expressing their gratitude. Reynolds tweeted, “Thank you to the town of Wrexham and @Wrexham_AFC for allowing us to witness your story and tell it,” Reynolds wrote on X. “This has been the greatest privilege of my life. Thank you #EmmyAwards for the honour and thank you @FXNetworks, @hulu, @DisneyPlus.”

The show was estimated to have made a profit of $9.5 million a few months ago. But receiving critical acclaim for the best must come as inspiration. The second season could also see some awards next year.
