The purpose of the pre-Olympic tournament is to decide the two best soccer nations from South America. These two sides will receive an opportunity to participate in the 2024 Paris Olympics. The tournament is certainly not going to be easy for Mascherano and the team as they face tough competition from Brazil, Uruguay, Colombia, and more.

One of the names called up by Mascherano is Thiago Almada of Atlanta United.  Almada was voted in the MLS Best XI of 2023 and was among the league’s standout players with Messi. Also, speaking of Messi, it could be possible that we see him play at the Paris Olympics.

Mascherano comments on Messi’s participation in the Olympics

It seems Mascherano would love to see Lionel Messi and Di Maria line up at the Olympics. In an interview with TyC Sports in September, he said, “Clearly, it would be a source of great pride for us to be able to have two world champions and these types of players. There are players who deserve to decide certain things. And clearly, Leo and Angel are part of that.”

Moreover, IOC president Thomas Bach also shares a similar view as he wants the 2008 Olympic Gold winner to play a part in the tournament. A victory also means Messi will be the first soccer player in history to win 2 Olympic golds and a World Cup.
