Canelo Alvarez's fallout with Oscar De La Hoya's Golden Boy Promotions was the talk of the town. Today, let's look at the real reason behind his lawsuit!
Following his triumph in the rematch against Gennadiy Golovkin on September 15, 2018, Alvarez wasted no time and inked an impressive 11-fight, $365 million contract with DAZN.
At the inception of its operations, DAZN showcased promotional advertisements prominently featuring Alvarez and then proceeded to expand and diversify its roster of athletes.
Alvarez openly harbored disdain towards Oscar De La Hoya, the founder of Golden Boy Promotions, as he believed De La Hoya was making commitments to DAZN without obtaining his consent—a situation that fueled Alvarez's dissatisfaction.
Canelo joined forces with Eddie Hearn's Matchroom Boxing, a move that personally stung Oscar De La Hoya. This decision fueled an ongoing feud between the two promoters.
During an interview on the Breakfast Club, Alvarez revealed to Charlamagne Da God that De La Hoya is not the same person off-camera as he appears to be on television.
He said, "I came to them with my contract and told them what I wanted. We are loyal, we are the only fighters who stayed with them when everybody left him. Because I'm loyal and I treat everyone like family and I did the same thing with Golden Boy. I don't know if he's a good or not but I think he is not the person that he shows. He is all about the business."
