Errol Spence Jr. Eye Injury: Here's How It Effected His Eyesight

Just weeks before Errol Spence Jr was scheduled for a fight with Manny Pacquiao, Spence Jr. was injured in the eye, causing his match to be cancelled. Let's look at the details about his eye injury.

At the World Class Boxing Gym in downtown Dallas, Spence was in the middle of a session when he suddenly sensed that something was wrong. He promptly halted the session and exclaimed, "My eye, my eye."

How was Spence injured?

As per Spence Jr., "I do remember when it happened because when the guy hit me I felt like little, I heard like a little pop and then I went to the corner like man my eye or whatever, they looked at my eye and then I actually came back out there."

Despite feeling an issue with his left eye, Spence sparred again two days later. However, a prescheduled checkup confirmed the problem, and he was warned not to spar to avoid risking his eye.

Doctors warned Spence Jr.

After being diagnosed with a retinal detachment/break, Spence was declared unfit for the highly anticipated Aug. 21 pay-per-view bout with Pacquiao. He underwent surgery in Dallas the next day, with an air bubble placed on the healing eye.

Fortunately, Spence's retinal detachment was detected before it progressed to the center of his vision, as these injuries often start by compromising peripheral vision before affecting the central vision.
