George Kambosos, the former unified world lightweight champion, secured a highly debated majority decision victory against English boxer Maxi Hughes in Shawnee, Oklahoma. The win, however, has stirred quite the controversy.
Throughout the majority of the fight, Kambosos Jr. and Maxi Hughes heavily relied on basic punches. In the second round, Kambosos Jr. landed a beautiful straight hand on Hughes, who countered with an elbow strike.
According to the scorecards, two judges awarded the bout to Kambosos Jr., while David Sutherland scored it as a draw. Gerald Ritter and Josef Mason scored the contest 115-113 and 117-111 in favor of Kambosos Jr. respectively.
This was not taken well by fans, after which, Kambososo Jr. expressed his views on Twitter, releasing a lengthy statement defending his victory.
Kambosos Jr. wrote, "Do yourself a favour and mute that biased commentary & rewatch the fight! And then tell me exactly what you think as many people have gone back, done that and seen the decision was fair and correct."
Kambosos called Hughes a "dangerous" fighter. He also said Hughes is a "true top 10 lightweight". Moreover, 'Ferocious' expressed his doubt regarding the 117-111 scorecard but tweeted that the "8/4, 7/5 decision in our favor was accurate."
