Due to concerns regarding their finances, governance, and ethics, the International Boxing Association (IBA) has been sanctioned and barred from organizing boxing events at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics and the upcoming Paris Games. Has boxing been removed from the Olympics? Let's find out!
The IOC has reportedly expelled the IBA from the Olympic movement, making it no longer the governing body of amateur boxing.
69 members supported the decision, one member opposed it, and 10 members abstained. This marks the first time in the IOC's 129-year history that a governing body has been ousted.
Despite the absence of an international federation to govern the sport, IOC President Thomas Bach reassured that boxing would still be included in the 2024 and 2028 Olympics.
“We do not have a problem with boxing, we do not have a problem with boxers,” stated Bach in an IOC session.
Boxing is included in the Paris 2024 Olympics, with the IOC overseeing the qualification bouts and competition instead of the IBA, as in the Tokyo Games 2021.
