7-time F1 champion and arguably the greatest F1 driver of all time, Michael Schumacher once talked about the difference between F1 and Indy500, as he hailed F1 as the best open-wheel racing competition. Meanwhile, last year's IndyCar Series champion, Will Power slammed F1 for their poor competition, as he hailed IndyCar as the best open-wheel racing.
During his time with the Ferreri, Schumacher appeared on CBS’ iconic show, ‘60 Minutes’. During that interview, he was asked about driving at Indy500. However, he thought it would be a step down from F1. He also felt that he had nothing to prove to anyone, as he did not see any challenges in Indy500. Also, he discussed drivers who failed in Formula 1 switching to IndyCar, while IndyCar drivers didn't succeed in F1.
In a recent interview at Monaco, current F1 champion, Max Verstappen, said, “Not the IndyCar race. I do appreciate what they do. It’s insane, those drivers … I have a lot of respect for what they do, but for me now that I’ve been in F1 for so long, I don’t need to risk my life or get an injury to my legs or anything. It’s not worth it anymore. Maybe Le Mans. I like endurance races, so I’ll probably do a few, hopefully soon.”
Last year’s IndyCar Series champion, Power said in a recent interview, “It’s (IndyCar) so tough, an amazing field, the toughest field in the world, and people need to know it, especially compared to Formula One. Formula One’s a joke as far as competition, but not as far as drivers. They have amazing drivers. And I feel sorry for them that they don’t get to experience the satisfaction we do with our racing because that is the top level of open-wheel motorsport.”
