“It was just a tough week for me,” a teary-eyed Spiranac said to news outlets. “A lot of stress.” The then 22-year-old had just attended the Dubai Ladies Masters, a Ladies European Tour event, and scored a 12-over par from the first two rounds, not making the cut.
Notably, Paige was still a social media icon at the time. And many speculated that Spiranac got the spot to play because of her popularity and not her talent. And all the negative comments led her to break down after the event.
“I feel like I was invited here,” she further added. “And I wanted to prove that it was for other reasons than just my social media.” However, since she couldn’t advance to the final rounds, the golfer couldn’t prove her golfing ability, and it made her sad.
“I’m definitely going to not look at my phone for a while,” Spiranac said after the tournament. “Probably take a break from social media just to kind of step away and re-evaluate everything.”
