After increasing the prize money for the PGA Tour events, the Tour might come up with another strategy. Jay Monahan made the enhancements to retain the players who did not join LIV. And now, they have added a new plan which might come into action. Their focus is to compete and ace the rival Saudi-backed Tour.
In the press conference, McIlroy said, “Historically we’ve had tournaments that haven’t had cuts and really wasn’t any grumbling about it before LIV came along. So I think you’re going to see a mixture of both, to be honest with you.”
The pro golfer pointed out the history of the American Tour. He said that the Tour used to have four of WGCs. Golfers had to play two playoff events, but now things have changed. The playoffs “went to three, so that’s six, then you had the two fall events, CJ and ZOZO.”
If this happens, the more no-cut events will work as a weapon against the LIV Golf league. Apart from fewer holes and the game format, there is another difference between the rival Tours. The one thing that separates them is the need for cuts on the rival circuit of the American Tour. The authorities want to exploit the opportunity to defeat its competition. However, there still needs to be official news about it from the Tour.
The CJ Cup winner is on board with the plan and is excited about it. A lot of conversation still has to take place. But the pro golfer has a few pointers. He is not entirely on board with the plan of more no-cut events, only to save the legacy of the Tour. He said, “I think some tournaments more than others lend themselves to maybe having cuts and trying to keep some sort of history here.”
McIlroy gave an example of ‘the old LA Open‘ holding a special place in golf’s history. The pro also suggested, “Is this an event that maybe should keep a cut going forward? Potentially, because of the history of it.“
