“He was very confident,” Amy Mickelson said about how the golfer felt before entering the final round at the Muirfield Golf Links, Scotland. “Very confident, relaxed, excited for the day,” she continued in the interview after his win. “He said, ‘I’m gonna go bringing home the Claret Jug!'”
“He’s been enjoying it so much,” the very happy-looking Amy Mickelson said about her husband’s mood in the Open week. “He always seems to play well when he’s having fun,” she stated.
Phil met Amy McBride in 1992, the same year he turned professional. They got married in 1996 and have been leading a blissful life ever since. Furthermore, she used to watch him play in almost all of his tournaments until she was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2009.
Notably, Mickelson put a hold on his PGA Tour schedule and stayed by her side while she battled the disease. As a couple who has faced difficulties together, the two knew each other inside out. And that is why, she knew it in her heart that he would win his first Open.
It is a tradition for the British Open winner to celebrate by drinking out of the Claret Jug. However, Phil the Thrill never does anything ordinary and opted to drink a 1990 bottle of Romanee Conti wine, worth $40,000, from the trophy! Interestingly, the Open only offered prize money of $1.43 million for the winner in 2013.
