They have been close from the beginning and have made many comic moments together. Couples and Woods are quite the pair when it comes to taunts and reactions which definitely create a fun atmosphere in the crowd and brings chuckles to the viewers. This reaction also happened in 2009 when Woods was on the US team captained by Fred Couples.
At the beginning of the week of the game, in case of an injury, Couples had to put a name in the envelope and give it to the head official Steve Carman, So as the story goes on, when the week ended Steve Carman comes back to return the envelope back to the captain. Fred tells him to read out loud the name written on the envelope and the name reads 'Tiger Woods' which shocked the whole room. So he had actually somehow unhooked the envelope and replaced the name already in it with the name Tiger Woods as a joke.
Tiger texted his captain for weeks after this whole envelope story happened and said to him "dude you have the biggest balls I've seen on anyone". But woods didn't actually find out about the truthful scenario of that situation until two years later. He was still under the impression that Couples actually put his name down on the envelope and didn't know that was just a prank.
When Couples finally told the true story he took a lot of Heck from it others who were kept in the dark and fooled. "But for two years I had everyone thinking I put Tiger Woods's name in that envelope," Fred Couples says with a grin on his face.
