Mickelson shared his struggles of trying to mess with the 15-time major champion whenever he tried to trash-talk with Woods. He talked about the healthy banter that took place between both the golf legends and how it was so easy for Woods to overpower whatever Mickelson said. The golfer used the term “trump cards’ to describe all of Woods’ wins in the sport.
Lefty also added, “Whether it’s 14 majors, 79 wins, however many player-of-the-year awards, FedEx Cups. He owns all the trump cards. So I have to be very careful and strategic in my smack talk, because if I lay something down, in comes a trump card, you know, and that shuts me right up.”
The two have known each other since the early days of their respective careers. However, their friendship started to bloom after Mickelson offered to help Woods in 2015 when the legend was suffering through chipping yips. Later, Tiger Woods served as the vice-captain in the 2016 Ryder’s Cup and Phil Mickelson was the team leader.
Mickelson said that Tiger Woods was his active supporter and whatever he said was taken seriously by everyone. Woods sent encouraging texts to Mickelson after every round he played in Mexico City. and also sent his heartiest congratulations to the golfer after the tournament.
Woods and Mickelson are two of the most well-known players. Both the players started off playing on the PGA Tour. However, Phil Mickelson recently left the former tour and joined hands with the Saudi-backed LIV Golf Invitational Series.
