In a phone interview, Mickelson’s mother, Mary, revealed her son’s feeing while being sidelined from defending the PGA Championship. To everyone’s surprise, Mary explained that Phil was quite relaxed and was contemplating the future of his career.Mary was happy for her son and said, “I wish you could see him now.”
Mary stated, “He’s relaxed, he laughs all the time.” He’s not on the phone with people that are calling him for this and that.” Lefty had spent the majority of his time off with his family, according to his mother. “He has taken a lot of time with our family,” she confirmed.
Mary said she was happy her son was so free and calm. She explained that the time off had done him good and that when he did decide to go back and play, he would be an entirely different person, playing with a different perspective. She said when Mickelson did return, the fans would see “someone who’s going to enjoy playing just to be playing.”
A break from golf wasn’t the only change in Lefty’s life then. He had also grown out his beard. Mary spoke of her son’s new look over the phone and said, “I didn’t recognize him at first.” She claimed to have never seen him like that before and described his new look, saying he had grown a little bit of a beard and mustache. “I don’t ever remember him doing that before,” she said.
But Mary was enjoying Phil’s updated style because it meant that fewer people recognized him when they went out. “Not too many people recognize him, so it’s been fun to be able to go out with him,” she claimed.
Soon after his return, in June, Phil defected over to LIV Golf. He claimed that it provided a great way for him to spend more time with his family. Although Lefty is undeniably a devoted family man, the $200 million deal was certainly the cherry on top for the golfer.
