2x World Series Champion Criticizes Yankees' 'Babied' Players, Backs Aaron Boone and Brian Cashman

The New York Yankees' 2023 season took an unexpected turn, jeopardizing their winning record. Various groups attribute the Pinstripes' struggles to different factors, including fan criticism of the front office and manager Aaron Boone. However, a 2x World Champion from the Yankees' past might have a different perspective.

Former Champion David Wells Shifts Blame to Players

During Old Timers Day at the Bronx, former Yankee David Wells disputed the media's common blame of the front office and manager, asserting that players themselves were responsible for the team's decline. In a Talkin Yanks video, he shared, “It always seems like the GMs, the managers are getting fired and getting blamed for it – it’s the players”.

Wells Advocates Tougher Approach

Wells criticized the modern tendency to coddle players and emphasized the importance of holding them accountable, regardless of their salaries. He highlighted the lack of camaraderie and the absence of players calling each other out in today's clubhouses. As per him, “I think nowadays they coddle them too much, they baby them and they don’t let them do what they should.”

Yankees Aim to Course Correct Despite Challenging Season

While facing slim postseason chances in 2023, the Yankees are pinning hopes on emerging stars like Jasson Dominguez and Austin Wells for 2024. Manager Aaron Boone seeks to build confidence despite ongoing challenges in the current season.
