Despite Having 6x Net Worth, Billionaire Michael Jordan Falls Behind MLB Great Alex Rodriguez in Elite Spending Category
Alex Rodriguez has amassed a net worth of $350 million due to his MLB career and his current business ventures. After buying the NBA side Minnesota Timberwolves, he even managed to surpass $1.7 billion Michael Jordan in a specific category.
Alex Rodriguez has spent the most money by a former athlete
Michael Jordan bought the Charlotte Hornets in 2010, setting the record for the most money spent by a former athlete to buy a sports team. But former MLB star Alex Rodriguez reportedly broke that record while purchasing the NBA Western Conference team Minnesota Timberwolves.
A-Rod surpasses MJ
In a Tweet, Front Office Sports said, “Alex Rodriguez has contributed more than $200M to buy the Minnesota Timberwolves — surpassing Michael Jordan for the most cash input ever made by a former athlete to buy a pro sports team. ARod and Marc Lore now own nearly 40% of the franchise.”
MJ has yet to find success as a basketball team owner
When Michael Jordan bought the Charlotte Hornets, many expected the team to become a juggernaut. Instead, they fail to make the playoffs on a regular basis. The times they have qualified for the playoffs, they often go out in the first round. They currently have a promising young star in LaMelo Ball, but it remains to be seen if Jordan can put a good supporting cast around him.
