The prospect of a 17-year-old girl facing the mighty Yankees generated considerable media coverage

The prospect of a 17-year-old girl facing the mighty Yankees generated considerable media coverage, most of it is condescending. One paper wrote, “The curves won’t be all on the ball” when “pretty” Jackie Mitchell takes the mound. Another reported that she “has a swell change of pace and swings a mean lipstick.” The tall, slim teenager, clad in a baggy Lookouts uniform, also posed for cameras as she warmed up by taking out a mirror and powdering her nose.

Mitchell retired in 1937 at the age of 23 after becoming furious since her story about playing baseball was being used as something of a side show. In 1982 Mitchell was invited to throw out the ceremonial first pitch for the Chattanooga Lookouts on their season opening day. Jackie Mitchell died in Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia, on January 7, 1987, and was buried in Forest Hills Cemetery in Chattanooga.
