Dale Earnhardt Jr Criticizes NASCAR’s Rule Change After “Anticlimactic” Sonoma Race

NASCAR

Earlier this year, NASCAR announced a rule change in the Cup road course races and we have already seen the implementation of the new rule at COTA.

After the Sonoma race, Denny Hamlin criticized the new rule. Later, Dale Earnhardt Jr also opened up about the disadvantages of the new rule.

What’s the new rule?

As per NASCAR, there will be no stage breaks in six Cup road course races in 2023. Those races are Circuit of the Americas, Sonoma, Chicago street course, Indianapolis road course, Watkins Glen, and Charlotte Roval. We have already seen the new rule applied at COTA and Sonoma. Apart from that, some Xfinity and Truck Series races will also witness the new rule.

Denny Hamlin talks about no stage breaks at Sonoma

During the recent episode of his ‘Actions Detrimental’ podcast, Hamlin said, “The way that we’re doing with no stage points now, it actually lets the race play out more naturally, and so you don’t have this flip-flopping. But the race has a potential to get boring. I mean, it does.”

Dale Jr criticizes NASCAR for the rule change

On ‘Dale Jr Download’ podcast, Earnhardt Jr said, “I’m looking at TV, it’s counting the laps down to the end of the stage. And I’m so programmed of the idea of a yellow getting ready to come out and as that number gets counted down and the stage ends and the caution doesn’t come out and these points go wherever they go and they keep racing… It just was a weird deal… I’m not criticizing…I’m not aborting on this change, but it was just a little anticlimactic for the end of the stage.”
