Denny Hamlin Criticizes Texas Motor Speedway Overhaul

NASCAR

NASCAR driver Denny Hamlin has voiced his dissatisfaction with the recent changes made to the Texas Motor Speedway, criticizing the $710.8 million contractor for their handling of the project.

The Problem with the Speedway

The Texas Motor Speedway was in dire need of repair after a lightning strike caused significant damage. However, the renovation, which included a new 80-foot-wide asphalt layer, has not been well-received by drivers. Hamlin stated, "They (SMI) went rogue when they redesigned it... And they've redesigned a lot of tracks; a lot of them we don't race anymore."

The Issue with PJ-1

Hamlin specifically took issue with using PJ-1, a traction component to enhance tire grip. He described it as "so slick that you can't even touch it," suggesting that a chemical solution could remove it from the track.

Interestingly, Hamlin's sentiments were echoed by his rival, Kyle Larson. Both drivers agree that changes need to be made to improve the racing experience at the Texas Motor Speedway.
