Massive Setback Leads Fans to Believe NASCAR Has “Lost Its Identity Completely”
NASCAR
NASCAR has been one of the most popular sports in the USA for many years. However, viewership has dropped massively over the last few years, apart from the 2022 season.
Recently, Fox Sports revealed the numbers for this season, which did not draw positive reactions from fans. Many fans blamed Fox Sports for the viewership loss.
NASCAR’s coverage on Fox Sports
Fox Sports has been covering NASCAR for the last 20 years. In 2022, NASCAR’s contract ended with Fox; however, they extended it for 2 more years. As per the current deal, Fox will show the first 16 Cup Series races of the season and the prestigious Daytona 500. Notably, Fox’s coverage has ended at Sonoma.
Fox Sports’ viewership numbers
Sports Business Journal’s Adam Stern recently took to Twitter and revealed the numbers, as he said, “@FoxSports finished its portion of the 2023 @NASCAR Cup Series schedule with an average of 3.315 million viewers per event, down 10% from 2022. NASCAR was the No. 1 or No. 2 sport of the weekend on U.S. TV nine times for the first half this year, one better than last season.”
Many fans pointed out the annoying commercials during races as one of the reasons for the low viewership. One fan wrote, “The sport has lost its identity completely. The TV networks don’t do features on the drivers anymore. It’s just become one big corporate s*** show.” Another fan wrote, “Great job NASCAR. Continue going woke and you’ll eventually have nothing left.” One fan said, “Get rid of Mike Joy.”
