Most Gruesome Wreck in NASCAR History That Cut Legendary Driver in Half

NASCAR

Many NASCAR drivers suffered injuries and deaths due to on-track incidents. Dale Earnhardt was one of the most prominent names, whose death changed NASCAR forever.

Before Earnhardt’s death, one of the legendary drivers, Russell Phillips, suffered possibly the most gruesome death in motorsport history.

Russell Phillips’ career

Phillips was predominantly a NASCAR Sportsman Division driver, as he owned the no. 57 car and drove it in various races. His best finish came in 1993 when he had an 8th-place finish. In 1995, he started to show his talent, as he made some strong runs.

In 1995, at Charlotte Motor Speedway, Phillips entered the race after winning his first pole position. The accident occurred on lap 17 when Russell went high to avoid an accident; however, he was hit by Steven Howard’s car, as he was also trying to avoid the wreck in front of him. Phillips’ car went against the catch fence, and the roof of the car was completely shattered.

The gruesome death

A video footage showed that a driver was running toward Phillips’ car trying to help. But the driver quickly turned away after seeing Phillips’ body. A photographer described the scene, saying, “As gruesome a wreck as I can ever recall.” As per reports, Phillips’ hand was found in the catch fence and his head was found at the pit road entry. Despite the death, the race was not stopped, as it was resumed after 40 min.
