NASCAR’s Le Mans Debutant in 1976 Serves Rick Hendrick and Richard Childress a Sharp Reminder of Their Old Promise

NASCAR returned to the prestigious Le Mans in 2023 with Hendrick Motorsports’ Garage 56. They were celebrating a big success as they completed the endurance test.
Meanwhile, the last time NASCAR made an impact in Le Mans was back in 1976, when legendary driver Hershel McGriff made his debut. He recently recalled a promise made by Rick Hendrick and Richard Childress.
Garage 56’s tremendous effort in Le Mans
NASCAR made its triumphant return to Le Mans through the Garage 56 team. HMS was a big part of this team. They finished in the 39th position, which was commendable. At one point, they ran as high as 27th with Jenson Button behind the wheel. However, a mechanical issue halted their progression. Nevertheless, it was a successful return for NASCAR.
NASCAR’s last Le Mans driver talks about the current car
The last driver who represented NASCAR in Le Mans back in 1976, Hershel McGriff, said in a recent interview, “I would like to get in a 56 car, that’s the one I would say because they are so different and I can’t imagine how everything drives probably, compared to what I have driven before it.”
Notably, McGriff is 95 now; Speaking about getting a car from Rick Hendrick and Richard Childress, he said, “They both promised me a car… I was at Sonoma a couple of years ago and Richard Childress was doing a thing up on the stage… some fans say to me, you think you’ll ever drive again, and I kiddingly say well I might drive when I am 100… Childress turned around and shook my hand. He says if you do I will furnish the car and all the crew and he shook my hand in front of this camera.”
