ASCAR which stands for Anglo-American Stock Car Racing was Britain’s attempt at creating a stock car racing series like NASCAR. While the idea sounded brilliant in theory, the result had a disappointing turnout.
Making its debut in 2001, ASCAR’s first race was held on May 26 at the Rockingham Motor Speedway with John Mickel winning the cup.
"ASCAR is about delivering motorsport as entertainment," said series CEO Mike Schmidt. "Teams should be prepared not to take themselves too seriously – that will endear them to the fans."
Dwindling entries and issues with funding caused the Motorsport Association governing body axed the championship in September 2007 before finally folding in 2008.
