Three Biggest NASCAR Underdog Stories at Nashville Superspeedway

NASCAR

NASCAR is returning next week after a week off at one of the most iconic tracks, Nashville Superspeedway. While the Superspeedway only hosted two Cup Series races, they had plenty of Xfinity Series and Truck Series history.

Over the years, we have seen some great victories, stars in the making, and some underdog stories. We will take a look at some upsets or underdog victories in Nashville over the years.

The History of Nashville Superspeedway

The track is 1.3 miles long and has a concrete oval. It is located just outside Music City. This track hosted two NASCAR Cup Series races, 23 NASCAR Xfinity Series races, 15 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series events, and eight Indy Racing League races. Despite having very few Cup Series races, it has a long history and some underdog stories.

Bobby Hamilton’s 2004 Truck Series win

A Nashville resident, Bobby Hamilton had to spend time on the streets homeless before getting into NASCAR. He won 4 races in the Cup Series and one of his greatest victories came on home soil. Hamilton overtook David Starr with eight laps to go. Despite having communication issues with his team, he managed to win the race, which was arguably his greatest accomplishment in NASCAR history.

Johnny Benson’s victory in 2006

During the Toyota Tundra 200 in 2006, Nashville, Todd Bodine, and Mike Skinner went back and forth on the track, which cost both of their races. Benson took the opportunity and stole the win from them. This was a massive upset, as both Skinner and Bodine were favorites to win.

David Green finally snapped his winless streak

In the 2003 Pepsi 300, David finally ended his winless streak, dating back to 1996. In the final four laps, his car came alive, as he went past Johnny Sauter on the final lap to win the race. The 1994 Busch Series Champion went on to win 3 more races in the 2003 season.
