NASCAR

As the Crayon 301 Race is approaching at New Hampshire Motor Speedway, we will take a look at one of the most unique trophies in NASCAR, which will be presented to one of the drivers after the race on Sunday.

Notably, it’s a giant lobster trophy, which in fact is a real lobster. So, what happens to this trophy after the race?

The History of the lobster trophy

The lobster trophy of New Hampshire, aka Loudon, is one of the most unique trophies for all drivers. Since 2010, the tradition has started, as they gave it to the winners of the Cup Series winners at New Hampshire. It’s not your average lobster, as it weighs around 20 to 26 pounds.

In 2017, when Hamlin won the Overton’s 301 race, he was presented with the lobster trophy. However, he got really scared. Later in the presser, he said, “I’m not going to do anything with it. I’ve seen it and touched it for the last time… I have a lobster phobia. I just don’t like them. I can’t look at it. So as far as I’m concerned, they need to put it back in the water and let it live.”

So, what exactly happens to the trophy?

Well, it doesn’t exactly go the way Hamlin suggested. The lobster goes to the restaurant, where they cook the meat of the lobster. Then a taxidermist reassembles the shells of the lobster and mounts it as a trophy and presents it to the winner of the race the following year.
