The highest civilian honor that the president of the United States of America can bestow on anyone is the medal of freedom. It is presented by the president himself, to those, who have made unimaginable contributions to the field of their expertise. And you would be surprised to know that some NBA players have been given this honor as well!

Bill Russell

From winning 11 NBA titles in his 13 seasons in the NBA to becoming the first black coach as well, the ward was destined to go to Bill Russell. The award was granted to him in 2011 by Barack Obama.

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar

19-time NBA AllStar, 6 NBA championships in which 5 were with the Los Angeles Lakers and one with the Milwaukee Bucks, six-time MVP, and finally the NBA's all-time leading scorer, Kareem did it all.  He received this medal of freedom from Barack Obama as well in 2016.

Jerry West

The logo has been the last recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom. It was very well deserved as he was an asset to the league as a player, as well as a general manager. West has achieved a lot in his years and received the award through Donald Trump.

Bob Cousy

"The Houdini of the Hardwood", Bob Cousy was a teammate of Bill Russell for the latter part of his career. He won six NBA championships and led the league in assists for 8 consecutive years was awarded the medal of freedom at the age of 91 by Donald Trump.

Michael Jordan

How could MJ not be given this honor? Labeled as the GOAT, winning six straight titles, establishing an unmatched legacy for the Chicago Bulls, Jordan truly deserved it.  In fact, he was given this award in the same ceremony as Kareem by Barack Obama.
