Alongside the team's principal owner, Mark R. Walter, Johnson spent $50 million in the Los Angeles Sparks in 2014. After the previous proprietors gave up, the Lakers legend and Walter practically saved the organisation from extinction.
Magic Johnson welcomes future stars
Magic Johnson wasted no time after the 2023 WNBA draft in notifying the supporters of the prospective selections. First of all, he welcomed Zia Cooke from South Carolina and praised her talent. He wrote, “I’m excited that we are bringing a winner, dynamic guard that plays both ends of the court, and a player with a high basketball IQ to the @LASparks.” He further tweeted about Iowa’s Shaneice Swain and Monika Czinano.
How did Magic end up investing in Sparks?
Since the beginning of the franchise, the Lakers legend has had a small but significant role. He also saw his daughter and his three sisters compete for the squad. Paula Madison, the team's previous owner, informed the league in 2007 that she could no longer afford to continue the business, and in December 2014, she fired the staff. Johnson and Walter intervened to save the team in the meanwhile.
