“Was Tearing Team USA Apart”: ‘Luka Doncic-Type Player’, Who Is Not With Steve Kerr and Co, Destroyed Them in Scrimmage

The NBA recruits exceptional players from all over the world each year. The number of inventive, cunning, and talented players in the league has grown over time. Players like Joel Embiid, Trae Young, Giannis Antetokounmpo, and Luka Doncic have elevated their positions in the last ten years. While some players were able to show off their talent in their first season in the league, others needed more time to get used to things. Cade Cunnigham, the top choice for 2021, is one such talent. He had 17.4 points, 5.6 assists, and 5.5 rebounds per game in his debut season. He also finished third in the race for Rookie of the Year and earned a berth on the unanimous All-Rookie First Team.

Cunnigham is Team USA’s key to getting past Luka Doncic

In a recent fascinating interview, Brian Windhorst discusses Cade Cunningham's outstanding efforts in the most recent scrimmages with the help of Tim Bontemps and Tim MacMahon. Tim Bontemps exclaimed when questioned about Cade, "Cade Cunnigham is back and looks really good." After that, Bontemps discussed Cam's injuries, claiming that Cam may have been selected for Team USA's starting lineup.

Discussing Cam’s role in the scrimmages, Bontemps highlighted, “They had him in a Luka Doncic-type role on Friday during the scrimmages. The Select Team is basically here to mimic what the opposition is going to do during the tournament. Cade Cunnigham is essentially the same size as Luka. They had him playing the same way. And he was tearing Team USA apart,” before recounting specific impressive moments from the scrimmage and asserting Cam’s near-unstoppable presence.

Why will Cunnigham not compete alongside Team USA?

In a recent media engagement, Cunningham clarified that he is currently focusing on ensuring optimal physical shape for the NBA season. “They go over, and there’s so much traveling, there’s so much, you know, like real schedule, like team practice and everything,” Cunningham explained how the Team USA’s strict routine can tamper with his recovery process.

Despite his great on-court abilities, Cade's injury has curtailed his media appearance. His sophomore season was cut short by a shin injury to just 12 games, which prompted him to decide on surgery and keep him out of the 2022–23 season.
