From Calvin Ridley to Josh Shaw; NFL Players Suspended For Gambling

The NFL announced Atlanta Falcons wide receiver Calvin Ridley has been suspended for at least one year for gambling on NFL games. The NFL has had its share of gamblers over the years.

Alex Karras

One of the most dominant defensive players of the early 1960s, Karras was 28 when he served a one-year suspension after he admitted to placing bets on NFL games along with Packers running back Paul Hornung (more on him later).

Paul Hornung

Paul Hornung, the 1961 NFL MVP, was also banned from the league for a year after then-commissioner Pete Rozelle revealed Hornung had bet "up to $500" on NFL games, per ESPN. Hornung was reinstated into the NFL along with Karras in 1964.

Art Schlichter

In 1983, Rozelle suspended Baltimore Colts quarterback Art Schlichter, the No. 4 overall pick in the 1982 draft, for gambling. Schlichter began to develop a gambling addiction while in college at Ohio State, and it only escalated once he joined the NFL.

Josh Shaw

The league hit Shaw with a lengthy suspension back in November 2019 after he was caught gambling on an NFL game. Under terms of the suspension, Shaw was forced to miss the rest of the 2019 season and the entire 2020 season, which means he ended up being banned for a total of 21 games.

Calvin Ridley

An investigation by the NFL did not find any evidence that Ridley had used "inside information" to place his bets, nor that teammates and coaches knew of his gambling, the league said in a statement Monday. However, he has been suspended by the league for betting on NFL games. He will miss the entire 2022 season.
