“It Almost Killed Me”: Peyton Manning’s Former Teammate Once Revealed How the Negligence of Team Doctors Almost Cost His Life

Last year, Derek Wolfe, who won the Super Bowl with Peyton Manning, announced his retirement from the NFL. The DE started his career on a tough note, as he suffered a spinal cord injury while playing for the Broncos. However, that injury almost cost him his career, as he had a pretty bad seizure a few weeks after that injury.

When Wolfe was 23 years, he suffered a spinal cord injury while playing a pre-season game against the Seahawks. He was temporarily paralyzed for three hours. The medical team at CenturyLink Field, now Lumen Field, quickly transported him to a local hospital. Despite the horrific injury, he came back on the field just 2 weeks later.

During a recent interview with Joe Rogan, Wolfe suffered a bad seizure, which almost cost his life. “I had a seizure, like a bad seizure. It almost killed me, I was in a Coma for 36 hours,” Wolfe said in the ‘Joe Rogan Experience’ podcast.

Speaking about that spinal cord injury, Wolfe said, “So I was playing like on the end of the line, on the right side and then the fullback hit me on top of the head.” He told Rogan that he was not getting fresh blood to his brain, which was the main cause of the seizure. Speaking about the difference between the team doctors and the hospital doctors, he said, “So they tried to keep me in the hospital after the game. Doctors wanted me to stay, but the team doctors were like, ‘you are good, we can go,’”
