The pair clashed for the first time on September 26, 2003, at UFC 47, where the then-lesser known Diaz defeated the then-rising prospect Lawler via KO in the second round.
After UFC 47, Diaz defeated several elite MMA athletes, such as Frank Shamrock, Paul Daley, B.J. Penn, and more. He also became the welterweight champion in Strikeforce, WEC, and IFC, MMA promotions.
After UFC 47, Lawler put himself back on the map by defeating several elite fighters and eventually became the UFC welterweight champion by defeating Johny Hendricks at UFC 181. He had two successful title defenses before losing it to Tyron Woodley at UFC 201.
