Veteran Cyclist, 62, Triumphs Over Near-Fatal Encounter

Steve Elwell would have never thought in his wildest dreams that his riding hobby would turn into an unforgettable nightmare. On October 3rd, the engineer, fitness coach, and cycling enthusiast excitedly took his bicycle out for a ride. Unfortunately, his love for cycling was put to the test by an unprecedented crash.

A Narrow escape from death

While riding in the early morning, a speeding black car hit Steve on Chandler Boulevard's cycling lane as he prepared to turn left onto 21st Street. The passing pastor helped Steve, who was unconscious, and called for help.

The Veteran sustained brutal injuries

The accident severely affected Elwell, resulting in a significant concussion, five broken ribs, a massive hematoma on his left hip, and various cuts and scratches. While his physical injuries are improving, he still faces challenges, as he said, "...but to be concussed is a whole different story.”

Steve Elwell an avid cyclist

Steve is a cycling enthusiast and spent the last 20 years cycling in the area. His love for cycling influenced him to create a cyclist-only Facebook group called ‘Stevebay,’ boasting 25,000 members. While Elwell recovers, lingering questions about the accident remain.
