Though the boxing gurus favored Tyson Fury before the match, Francis Ngannou shocked everyone by performing the way he did. In a contentious match in Saudi Arabia, WBC heavyweight champion, Tyson Fury secured a split-decision victory over former UFC fighter. Despite being knocked down by Ngannou’s left hook in the third round, Fury managed to claim the win with scores of 96-93 and 95-94, although one judge scored it 95-94 in Ngannou’s favor.

This victory came despite Ngannou’s powerful shots and ability to floor Fury. Ngannou had the backing of the legend, ‘Iron’ Mike Tyson, who was proud of his pupil. The power puncher, however, was disappointed with the verdict. He believes he clearly deserved to win. What reasoning has Ngannou given behind the apparent discrimination?

Francis Ngannou claimed himself winner instead of Tyson Fury

In an interview with ESPNMMA, which Michael Benson later posted on X, Ngannou explained his stand. When asked whether there was any surprise element in the fight against Fury, he said the only thing that surprised him was the result. “The fact that I didn’t win surprised me… If he’s being honest, he would say I won that fight. I won that fight, there’s not a question about it.” According to the MMA artist, an “honest” “Gypsy King” would agree to the fact that Ngannou has won the fight.

“But even before getting here I knew I’m not winning a decision. Because I’m a new guy in the house. I know they need – there’s a structural business out there – and you need to do a lot to destroy that. It is what it is.” It is always difficult for a newbie to establish their dominance in an unfamiliar arena, no matter how perfect their skills. This, Ngannou believes worked out in Fury’s favor.

Chris Eubank Jr. among the ones questioning the decision

Ringside observer Chris Eubank Jr. expressed disbelief at the outcome of the fight between Fury and Ngannou. The ‘Predator’s surprising knockdown of Fury in the third round showcased his potential, despite Fury’s recovery and  eventual victory. Eubank criticized Fury, suggesting he focused more on documentaries than preparation.

The decision faced widespread criticism, with NBA star LeBron James and fighters like Nate Diaz and Logan Paul expressing disappointment. The sports world echoed Eubank’s sentiment, deeming Fury’s win controversial, questioning the judges’ call after Ngannou’s impressive debut performance.
