In a vivid recollection, Matt reminisces about the craziest squat of his life - a monumental moment at a competition in 2006. With a staggering 1000 lbs on the barbell, the unforgettable feat unfolded in Las Vegas, where Matt competed in the 308 W class.

He says, “My last name started with W and somebody else quatted 1003 before me. But he dumps it over his head. Spotters lose 2 fingers between the monolift and the plates. And the guy pretty much scalps his head ’cause those bars are brand new squat bars.”

Continuing his recollection, Matt vividly remembers a chilling detail: a blood stain on the squat bar left by the previous participant. Undeterred, the bar was cleaned before his eyes, and he was beckoned to step up for his turn.

Matt says, “Louie said to me, If you can squat this, you’re a f****** maniac.”

Courage Against Adversity: Matt's Momentous Lift

Amidst the haunting memories of three previous participants losing their lives on the same squat rack, Matt mustered all his courage and determination to attempt the weight, battling the whirlwind of thoughts in his mind.

Matt says, “I already had my knees wrapped, I was ready to jump up.”
