After 1200 Violations & 20 Penalties Served to Lewis Hamilton & Co., FIA Propose an Effective Measure to Put an End to Future Chaos

The Austrian GP certainly was an eventful race, as plenty of drivers received penalties for their on-track activities. Lewis Hamilton and the Mercedes team suffered massively because of penalties. Hamilton and Toto Wolff had a slight argument regarding the FIA handing out penalties to other drivers. Meanwhile, the FIA is proposing something new, which could end all the controversies from the 2024 season.

The FIA punished drivers at the Austrian GP

During qualifying, Sergio Perez crossed the track limit; hence, his track time was deleted. During the race, many drivers crossed the track limit on turns 9 and 10. As per reports, there were 1200 track-limit infringements. As a result, the FIA served at least 20 penalties, 8 during the race and 12 post-race. Carlos Sainz, who finished the race in P4, dropped down to P6 after receiving a 10-second penalty. Esteban Ocon received a 30-second penalty, as he finished in P12.

Lewis Hamilton and Co suffered big time

Although Hamilton and Mercedes did not have the greatest race at the Austrian GP, the penalties certainly made their race worse. Hamilton finished in P7. However, he also received a 10-second penalty for track-limit infringements during the race. Hence, he finished the race in P8. He sounded really frustrated on the radio.

The FIA proposes an effective measure

Notably, the Austrian GP made a deal with F1, which will see them host the race until 2030. Hence, the FIA proposed the idea of a gravel bed at the exit of turns 9 & 10. However, the Red Bull Ring is used for other racing sports as well, such as MotoGP. Many suggested that a gravel bed could be dangerous for MotoGP drivers. Now, it will be interesting to see the solution in 2024 after a chaotic 2023 race.
