Toto Wolff Shifts Focus: Targeting Max Verstappen Instead of Resolving Lewis Hamilton's Challenges

The Belgian GP initially seemed positive for Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes, but issues with the W14 emerged, adding to their concerns before the summer break. Mercedes lacks clear development direction, and porpoising problems resurfaced in Spa. Toto Wolff's new target is not Red Bull but Max Verstappen, believing they can compete with Sergio Perez in the equation.

Mercedes' Burning Issues

Despite a seemingly good race weekend for Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes at the Belgian GP, issues with the W14 surfaced, adding to their erratic performances. Team Principal Toto Wolff seeks a solution to match Max Verstappen's dominance.

Wolff's Approach: Taking Verstappen Out of the Equation

Toto Wolff acknowledges Verstappen's dominance and suggests removing him from the equation to level the playing field. Appreciating Sergio Perez's performance, Wolff aims to challenge the second Red Bull car. Wolff said,  “I think if you just put Perez in the equation, we’re in the game.”

Hamilton's Strategy: Wanting Verstappen's Speed and Car

Lewis Hamilton praises Verstappen's form and suggests replacing Perez with himself to compete on equal terms. Eager to match Verstappen's pace, Hamilton believes he can give the Dutchman a run for his money. Hamilton said, “Do I want to be as fast as [Verstappen]? Of course. Would I like to have a car that’s as fast as him? Of course. If I would be in Sergio’s car, Max would not be having the same time he’s having now.”
