Accidents are a part of every sport, and this particular incident takes us back in time to March 29, 1959, when a fire broke out just before the start of a NASCAR race.
The NASCAR race at the half-mile Wilson Speedway came to a haul before it could even start when the front stretch grandstand was burned down to ashes.
A fan’s cigarette fell onto the structure beneath, resulting in a fire that spread slowly. Around 3,000 spectators were safely evacuated and the race began shortly after the fire was under control.
Located in North Carolina, the Wilson Speedway held 12 Cup Series races from 1951 to 1960. The track held local races till it was closed in 1989.
