A 1959 Tragedy Started From a Cigarette and Almost Ended an Historic Race to a Firey Pit

Accidents are a part of every sport, and this particular incident takes us back in time to March 29, 1959, when a fire broke out just before the start of a NASCAR race.

What happened?


The NASCAR race at the half-mile Wilson Speedway came to a haul before it could even start when the front stretch grandstand was burned down to ashes.

What started the fire?


A fan’s cigarette fell onto the structure beneath, resulting in a fire that spread slowly. Around 3,000 spectators were safely evacuated and the race began shortly after the fire was under control.

Current state of the racetrack


Located in North Carolina, the Wilson Speedway held 12 Cup Series races from 1951 to 1960. The track held local races till it was closed in 1989.
