The history of the team

The team came into existence in 1965. Stephen M. Ross established the team on August 16. The team was created in southern Florida as at that moment, Philadelphia already had the Philadelphia Dolphins. The franchise then moved to Florida to build the team.

A contest coined the name

Similar to other teams, this group also picked their name by the "name-the-team" contest, where nearly 20,000 entries were made. Among them, 600 people suggested "Dolphins," which was selected by the team owner, Joe Robbie. He found the name prominent as he said, "The dolphin is one of the fastest and smartest creatures in the sea."
