"Anywhere there are broken boards, there's potential for art to be created"- Hawaiian artist and sculptor, Ruben Aira Jr. is turning his philosophy into reality by turning washed-off surfboards into surfboard paintings with his creativity. The Honolulu-based artist was born in Cuba and worked in Alaska after which his talent was recognized by the surfing community in Hawaii. Hawaiian artist who turns waste into artwork!

In talks with News Now, Aira stated about his passion for surfboard painting, “I wanted to take something that was repurposed and try to see what can be done with it."


Aira is the only one-of-his kind artist in the world!

Aira is the only artist to do surfboard painting about which he stated, “I think that’s where I stand out is that I’ve been able to elevate the art form and create it into a way that hasn’t been done before."

The first process in the making of the painting is to carve the surfboards according to the required design or paint the board directly if no carving is required.
