Weeks before Skiing World Championships Begin, Unlikely Skier Breaks Another Record to Create History

Cross-country skiing legend Katsumi Saeki, 88, is shattering records and defying expectations. This incredible Japanese skier once again changed the course of history just before the Skiing World Championships.

The Global Stage: From Japan

At the Japan Masters Championships in 2022, Katsumi Saeki established a world record for the oldest female cross-country skier. But she didn't stop there.

Exceptional results in both the classic-style and freestyle events

Saeki, the only over-85 competitor at the Masters World Cup in Austria in August 2023, gave impressive performances. She beat participants 76–80 and 81–85 in the 5 km classic event, finishing in 26:18. The next day, she defeated competitors in the 76-80 and 81-85 age divisions by completing the 5 km freestyle race in 29:04.

Proof of Saeki's Courage and Strength

Spectators and rivals are in awe of Saeki's extraordinary cross-country skiing feats. Her endurance and decades of consistent training, which enabled her to ski in Nagano's brutal winters, are to be recognized for her long-term success.

In 2024, the Masters World Cup will take place.

Saeki, a recent world record holder, is determined to surpass herself. Her focus is now on Finland's 2024 Masters World Cup, which will be in February. She is an inspiration to people worldwide to achieve their athletic goals regardless of age.
